Amy Sarah Broadhurst (63kg), an athlete from Ireland who won the world championship in her weight class, is a new role model for young athletes in her country.
She won two significant titles this year, one at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul and the other at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She is only 25 years old. They refer to her as Baby Canelo, and she relates her narrative.
Broadhurst begins telling her story by stating, “This has been the best year of my life.”
It was a fantastic accomplishment to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Championships, but ever since I was a little child, my goal has been to earn a gold medal at the World Championships. To have finally accomplished one of my goals has left me with an incredible sensation that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
Since she was five years old, she has been training in boxing. Boxing was a family tradition for all three of her brothers, and their dad was their trainer.
“Even now, my father is the one who instructs me. She adds that he is the reason why she was selected for the Irish team.

The Dealgan Boxing Club in my hometown was where I got my start in the sport. When I initially joined, it was in a bad state of disrepair, it was very small, and it did not have any facilities for women. But when I got older and more women started boxing, new faculties were added to the boxing facility, and it also got bigger.’
Since 2015, she has been referred to by the nickname Baby Canelo.
It was at the EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships where everything got began. Since then, I can’t seem to get it out of my head! However, Canelo Alvarez is my favorite boxer, and I have a lot of respect for him. She remarked that he is an incredible boxer.
She also follows in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, an extremely famous Irish boxer who won five world championships and the Olympic gold medal.
Katie is and always has been a significant example for me to follow in many ways. Even when I was a child, I admired her and wished I could be just like her. During her training for the major bout she was going to have against Amanda Serrano in March, I had the incredible good fortune to be her sparring partner. Being in her presence was a great teacher for me. Broadhurst gushed about how incredible she was and how, in her opinion, she was the best female boxer who had ever lived.
The next set of accomplishments for Broadhurst are just around the corner. This coming week, she will compete at the European Women’s Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro, in the hopes of adding another championship to her already impressive collection.
I believe that my competitors will feel both dread and excitement when they face off against me. I believe that they will be aware of my status as a world champion, which may cause them to feel intimidated; nonetheless, they will strive to defeat me because they believe that doing so will be very thrilling for them. A target has been placed on my back now.’
Her life didn’t change all that much other than the fact that a lot more people knew who she was as a result of winning the IBA World Championships.
“With the exception of it, everything is the same. The fact that I don’t feel like a world champion is, in my opinion, a positive trait. “Because I wouldn’t want the title to make me think too highly of myself,” she explained in a humble manner.
Broadhurst mentioned that she had something that she had always wanted but was unable to purchase in the past. She was eventually able to succeed thanks to the prize money from the IBA.
“With the money from this prize, I was able to purchase my first home.” Being able to say that I am the proud owner of a house at my age is a significant accomplishment, and I take great pride in this fact. Broadhurst shared her plan, “I will also go on a shopping spree, but other than that, the remainder will go toward my savings.”
Her body, which she uses for athletic competition, is covered in tattoos. There is a tale to be found in the background of some of them.
The lion on my shoulder is my favorite, and on the same arm I have the phrase “fall seven times, stand up eight.” The lion is a symbol of royalty, as well as bravery and strength. Broadhurst explains that the other tattoo has a great deal of significance to her because she has been through a lot of challenging situations, particularly in boxing.
She has her sights set on the Olympics in 2024, which will be held in Paris.
“Achieving that has been my primary objective in boxing. I have a strong sense of optimism towards my chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games. Considering that I currently weigh 66 kilograms and 60 kilograms, the only thing left to do is decide which weight category I will compete in. For my part, I think the Olympics should have added the 64-kilogram class rather than the 66-kilogram class. It blows my mind that there are only two weight categories for those over 60 kilograms, yet there are four weight categories for those between 50 and 60 kilograms. She went on to say, “But I believe that it is extremely suitable for a lot of boxers.”
Boxing, in Broadhurst’s opinion, should unquestionably continue to be a part of the Olympic program.
Boxing is one of the sports that draws the most spectators to the Olympic Games; it would be a shame if it were eliminated. Reaching the Olympic Games is the goal of many young people, and if boxing were to be taken from the Olympics, I would be concerned about its future in amateur competition. Broadhurst asserted, “Once everything is fair, I don’t see how there could ever be an issue.”
