Discussions are taking place regarding the former world champion Danny Garcia and the current WBA “regular” middleweight champion Erislandy Lara.
Lara, who is 39 years old and has a record of 29-3-3 with 17 knockouts, is now free to fight Danny “Swift” Garcia after Gennadiy Golovkin was ordered to defend his IBF/WBA Super World title against Esquiva Falcao, who is also Golovkin’s IBF mandatory challenger. Lara’s record is 29-3-3 with 17 knockouts.
The news of the probable battle between the WBA secondary champion at 160 pounds, Lara, and the 34-year-old Garcia was reported by Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN.
Garcia would be going up from 154 pounds to face Lara for his WBA middleweight crown if the match were to go forward. Garcia’s record stands at 37-3, including 21 knockouts. This comes as a result of Danny moving up to 154 in July of last year, when he made his debut in the division against Jose Benavidez Jr.
On Twitter, Salvador Rodriguez revealed that they had been talking about Lara taking on Danny Garcia for a few days now.

Garcia defeated Benavidez Jr., a former welterweight contender and the older brother of David Benavidez, a former two-time WBC super middleweight champion. Garcia won the fight by a majority decision after 12 rounds, but he didn’t appear very spectacular doing it.
You can’t blame Garcia for looking less than spectacular against former Terence Crawford knockout victim Benavidez Jr. because he had just come off a layoff of over a year and a half since his last fight, which was in December 2020 against Errol Spence Jr. In fairness to Garcia, he was coming off of a layoff, so you can’t blame him for looking less than spectacular.
If Danny Garcia were to defeat the experienced Lara and win his WBA 160-pound title, it would place him in a position to fight the WBA Super champion Golovkin in the following year, provided that Golovkin did not retire or lose his belt in the interim.
A battle between Golovkin and Garcia would be an incredible bout that would garner a lot of interest from the boxing community. However, in order for that fight to take place, Danny will have to win against Lara, and Golovkin would have to keep winning until a match is formed between the two of them.
Garcia is a former world champion who has won titles in two different divisions. He possesses a great deal of talent, power, and experience. Despite the fact that his career has slowed down significantly since he was defeated by Spence in 2020, he still possesses a great deal of talent and power.
Despite the significant size disparity between the two competitors, it is not impossible for Garcia to emerge victorious against Lara. Because Lara has fought for a significant portion of his career at 154 pounds, Garcia won’t be able to take advantage of Lara’s size disadvantage in the same manner that Jermall Charlo, Chris Eubank Jr., or Golovkin could.
